Thin Veils and Fluid Borders | Reedy Gallery | University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

Oct 30 – Nov 2325 days

Chaska, MN

"Thin Veils and Fluid Borders" invites us to look past the geography of the land and instead feel its pulse. Together, these works create a collective meditation on how the environment shapes our internal mood, presenting the landscape as a living, breathing entity that shifts with the light and the mind's eye. As you move through the space, you'll see a striking conversation unfold between three distinct media: the fluid, weightless transparency of Nanci Yermakoff's watercolors; the thick, deeply layered textures of Jamie Lauler's oil paintings; and the spectral light of Brian Billadeau's…

Created Equal: The Premises and Promises of the Declaration of Independence

Oct 30 – Dec 112 dates

Regenstein Library, The Special Collections Research Center, IL

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain. Two days later, delegates in Philadelphia finalized a document designed to announce and explain that act to readers in America and Europe. The Declaration of Independence asserted the revolutionary right of a people to alter or abolish a government, grounding that principle in the "self-evident" claims that "all Men are created Equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights" and "that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." Over time, many reader…

ISAC Exhibit: Hartapu: The Forgotten King of Anatolia

Oct 30 – Feb 25119 days

The Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC) Museum, Chicago, IL

Seven years ago, Hartapu was little more than a name. Then, in 2019, an inscribed stone pulled from an irrigation canal in central Türkiye introduced the world to a king who claimed to have conquered Phrygia—one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient world. Suddenly, a ruler and a kingdom largely unknown to history demanded a place on the map of Iron Age Anatolia. The stone was found at Türkmen-Karahöyük, a massive tell rising 35 meters above the Konya Plain, that must have been Hartapu's capital. Though the site had gone largely unnoticed by archaeologists, it is one of the largest I…

Time, Fragmented

Oct 30 – Dec 436 days

Cochrane-Woods Art Center (CWAC), Chicago, ILapproximate location

Time, Fragmented asks what it means for a place to be shaped by complex social and environmental histories, and how distinct but interrelated histories coalesce to create a collective narrative. Along these lines, the exhibition considers contemporary practices of unearthing, both literally and figuratively, and investigates remnants of times past, piecing together the story that unfolds thereafter. In the context of shifting regional powers and migrating stories, Time, Fragmented illuminates the (hi)stories foundational to modern-day Turkey, tracing diasporas of culture, thought, and pract…

Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1

Oct 30 – 312 days

Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra*, Milwaukee, WI

In Beethoven’s first piano concerto, we begin to hear the composer step away from imitation and into his own true voice; Orli Shaham performs this daring concerto. Schumann’s “Rhenish” symphony was inspired by a happy vacation along Germany’s Rhine river, and its music glitters with sunlight. Guest conductor Kristiina Poska — “an iron baton in a velvet hand” (Diapason) — opens this program with music from fellow Estonian Ülo Krigul, who notes that his Proteus Pulse “derives its flows and pulsations from an old Greek God of Waters."
