Saving St. Andrew's Chapel: Traversing the Heritage / Sustainability Pendulum in the UK Today

The presentation will explore the many, often conflicting heritage and sustainability challenges in bringing a derelict mediaeval chapel back into use as a contemporary home in rural England. British architect Malcolm Fryer will outline his work, focusing on the ongoing project to repair and improve the St. Andrew's Chapel at Boxley in Kent. He will share details about his work with Historic England on thermal, moisture and airtightness performance as a case study that suggests directions and practices for the integration of efficiency and modernization into historic structures. Professor Fryer will also share his experience in taking NYU MA students to visit the project over the last few years, highlighting opportunities to participate in projects, investigating and contributing to emerging practices in our field.
