
Supported Studio: Relief Printmaking
This course is intended for any level of student who would like to spend time making relief prints in the print studio. We are exploring a new class format this year, so please read the description below and choose the right path for you.
Full Six Week Course: The full six week series is intended for beginners or anyone who would like a refresher. Nan will dedicate the first two sessions to step-by-step demonstrations for making a woodcut, including image design, image transfer, carving, and printing. The remaining four sessions will be supported studio time (see below).
Four Week Supported Studio: If you have already taken a relief class with Nan, we invite you to join us for a month of supported studio time. Registration includes one 4 x 6-inch piece of ¼-inch shina plywood, but you are welcome to bring your own relief project as well, whether rubber, lino, or wood. Please note that the presses will be set up for ¼-inch blocks. Other block thicknesses are welcome if you intend to print by hand.
Your registration will include the following supplies:
-3 x 4-inch woodblock (¼-inch shina) – 6 WEEK COURSE ONLY
-4 x 6-inch woodblock (¼-inch shina plywood)
-Akua printmaking inks
-Paper to make an edition of 10 prints (additional paper can be purchased)
-Shared carving tools
Optional Supplies for Supported Studio Time:
-Additional blocks (must be ¼-inch thick to print on the press) – ¼-inch Shina plywood or ¼-inch Baltic birch are recommended
-Printmaking paper
-Personal carving tools
