Instead Of

Why do artists do what they do, instead of something else? "Instead Of" displays major works from the VUMA collection for the first time: a 28-foot tapestry by fiber artist Sheila Hicks; prints and drawings by Chicago imagist Barbara Rossi; drawings and an embroidery by jazz vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant; and a 10-foot fresco by British duo Hannah Quinlan and Rosie Hastings. Drawing on the title of a work by Salvant, "Instead Of" explores artistic decision-making through materiality, scope, and scale. Overlapping themes in the artworks and resonances between the practices that produced them invite viewers to find interconnections and ask, what else if not this?
