"Heroes on Deck" Documentary Screening
Join us at EPL, in honor of Veteran's Day, for a screening of Harvey Moshman's documentary film, Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, followed by a live Q&A session.
Heroes on Deck tells the story about a little-known US Navy program that, in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor, recruited and trained 15,000 aircraft carrier pilots on Lake Michigan, just off Chicago's shores, This ingenious idea allowed the Navy to safely train enough pilots to ship out to the war in the Pacific and defeat the Japanese. As a result of the Midwest's challenging wind and weather, as well the inexperience of some of the pilots, more than 100 WWII fighter planes went to the bottom of Lake Michigan. In this film, we follow the recovery and restoration of three rare warbirds.
Harvey Moshman is a multi-Emmy Award winning producer and Evanstonian. He has produced three documentaries (Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, Eastland: Chicago's Deadliest Day, and Lost and Found: The Search for USS Lagarto), and all three have been broadcast nationally on PBS and received Emmy awards. When he is not working on documentaries, Harvey can be found roaming America’s back roads searching out odd and unusual destinations for his national PBS series Wild Travels, the successor to the WTTW series, Wild Chicago.
