UWL Celebrates: Native American Heritage Month
This event is free and open to the public
Sierra Krueger is an Academic Advisor at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a member of the Brothertown Indian Nation, also known as Eeyamquittoowauconnuck. Originally from Kiel, Wisconsin, Sierra earned bachelor's degrees in Social Work and Sociology from UW-Stevens Point and is currently pursuing a master's degree in Community and Organizational Leadership. Before joining UWL, she worked as a Community Health Worker with the La Crosse YMCA and as a first-year admissions counselor at Viterbo University. At UWL, she supports students across several academic programs as they navigate college, identity, decision-making, and belonging.
Sierra's story also offers an opportunity to learn about the Brothertown Indian Nation and its continuing presence in Wisconsin. The Brothertown community traces its formation to Indigenous peoples including Mohegan, Pequot, Narragansett, Niantic, Montaukett, and Tunxis ancestors who came together in the eighteenth century and ultimately established a community in Wisconsin. Today, the Brothertown Indian Nation continues as a distinct tribal community with approximately 4,000 enrolled members and a tribal government based in the Fond du Lac area.
