Family Day: Sky is the Limit with SkyART
In partnership with SkyART (https://skyart.org/) and inspired by the Smart's current exhibition How Do We Heal?, families will work together to create exquisite corpse sculptures that explore themes of care, connection, and community. First used in the early 20th century by the Surrealists, this collaborative artmaking process encourages families to construct unique superheroes out of air-dry clay and imagine the sky-high possibilities of how to take care of one another. In addition, families are invited to participate in an Embodied Creativity session with creative therapist Jessica Taing, an integrative experience combining therapeutic artmaking, trauma-informed yoga, and mindful reflection to explore the relationship between embodiment, creativity, self-expression, and wellbeing. Embodied Creativity sessions will run from 11 AM-12 PM, with a new session beginning every 20 minutes for up to 15 participants. Free; drop-in event, registration is encouraged. With creativity at the center of everything we do, SkyART provides free, safe, open spaces where people are empowered and connections are made. SkyART provides free art programming and art therapy to youth ages 7 to 24 on Chicago's South and West sides. At the center of everything is Family Table, SkyART's food, garden, and healthy meal program, because children can't be expected to be creative or learn when they are hungry. Our programs blur the lines between formal art education and creative expression, focusing on process-based learning and providing youth with safe spaces to express themselves and develop their voices.
