The Land of Everlasting Sky: Exploring the History We Inherit
In the summer of 1968 on family vacation in Warroad, Minnesota, ten-year-old Jill Swenson met an elderly Ojibway medicine man named Kakaygeesick [Everlasting Sky] and purchased a postcard picture of him at the trading post on the shore of Lake of the Woods. In 2014, she returned to the place where her great-grandfather had claimed a homestead in 1903 on Red Lake Reservation land—and met Kakaygeesick’s great-grandson. Jill Swenson, the author of book "The Land of Everlasting Sky", will speak on the relationship between two Lake of the Woods families – one Indigenous and one immigrant – and their connections to the land and each other.
