Gender-Affirming Garment Alterations
How do you hack your wardrobe to make it fully celebrate the intersection of all of your identities? We will explore the idea of Radical Visibility, a Disabled Queer dress reform movement based on highlighting the parts of us that society typically shuns. Sky Cubacub (fashion designer, community arts worker and founder of Rebirth Garments) will be supporting attendees with altering their existing garments to make them more gender-affirming and/or adaptive! Please bring garment(s) you would like help with; expect to alter one during the workshop itself, but Sky can give advice on multiple garments!
Other activities include talking about the relationships between “body + garment” as well as the idea of “process as performance”. We will discuss designing for disability, gender, race, size, sexuality and making work for our communities by shaping/subverting the already established design fields to work for us and meet our purpose.
Masks are required for this event.
No previous sewing experience required.
