Symphonic Band
“Whatsoever Things...”
Shawn Vondran, conductor; Liam Kantzler, bass trombone (Northwestern Concerto Competition winner)
The Symphonic Band’s December concert opens with Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzon per sonar primi toni No. 1 and continues with Henry Dorn’s Never Forgetting, a reference to a famous quote from poet Maya Angelou. Concluding the program’s first half is Robert Spillman’s Concerto for Bass Trombone, featuring Concerto Competition winner Liam Kantzler. The second half begins with Vivo, a colorful new work by Zhou Tian, before concluding with Whatsoever Things..., written in memory of Northwestern’s late Director of Bands John Paynter (1952-1996).
