Hike:

October will end with one of the biggest and brightest full moons of the year. Enjoy it on our Mammoth Moon Hike! Join our Chapter and the Waukesha County Land Conservancy for a full moon hike through the nighttime woods at the Hartland Marsh Preserve. It will also be an opportunity to earn 5 bonus miles for the Mammoth Hike Challenge! Located off Highway 83 in the Village of Hartland, the marsh spreads across 180 acres protected by the Waukesha County Land Conservancy in partnership with the Ice Age Trail Alliance and the Village of Hartland. The Bark River meanders through the preserve. Ranked as a Class 1 Wildlife Habitat by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the preserve protects ancient bur oaks and a vital habitat for birds and various woodland animals, including mink and turtles. Identified as an ebird hotspot with 141 species recorded.

Details:

We will hike 1.5 miles on the white-blazed (white blazes are used to indicate a loop trail that leaves the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and later returns to it.) loop off of the Hartland Segment. This is an easy hike suitable for hikers of all ability levels. All ages are welcome but ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. With sunset around 6:00 pm, a flashlight or headlamp is highly recommended. Dress warmly for the weather and trail conditions, and please leave dogs at home. If conditions are unsafe we will cancel.

Location:

Park at the Cottonwood Wayside lot. We will meet at the pavillion.
