Opera Talk: The New York City Opera
There used to be two great opera companies in New York City. The historic, elite, conservative Metropolitan Opera and the upstart, adventurous, unpredictable New York City Opera, the opera of the people. The demise of the New York City Opera was a blow to our culture that opera lovers still feel. Join us as we remember the glory days of Beverly Sills and Julius Rudel, and the budding careers of Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras, Samuel Ramey, and Renee Fleming. The opera company that was the dream of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia put its stamp on New York City and deserves to be celebrated.
