Movies on the Lawn: Sleepy Hollow

Johnny Depp’s Ichabod Crane is not the twitchy schoolmaster of the page but a squeamish New York constable, sent upriver in 1799 to investigate a run of beheadings in a Dutch farming village. Christina Ricci plays Katrina Van Tassel. Burton keeps Irving’s characters and his corner of the Hudson Valley, then strips out the wink at the end: here the Horseman is emphatically, gruesomely real. Fog, black horses, bare trees, and a body count. The film is rated R.
