The Duruflé: Requiem
The Friends of Music at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, New Canaan, CT, presents Maurice Duruflé: Requiem November 1st , 2026, at 5:00 PM, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge, New Canaan, CT.
2026 marks the 40th year since the death of this great French composer, who has been called “The Last Impressionist,” in the line of Debussy and Ravel. His Requiem, in which he combines centuries-old plainsong with colorful writing for choir, organ, and orchestra, is recognized as one of most sublime, contemplative, and transcendent works of its type. The event is preceded by a pre-concert lecture \(at 4:30PM\) on Duruflé and his Requiem by the St. Mark’s Director of Music Ministries, Ned Tipton.
Duruflé provided three different versions of the accompaniment for this beautiful work: organ-only, chamber orchestra and organ, and large orchestra and organ. The middle version, which dates from 1961, was ultimately his favorite. In addition, it is also rare to hear a performance during which certain small sections are sung by a children’s choir – a preference he clearly stated in the chamber version. The St. Mark’s Music program, and the Friends of Music, are delighted to present this version to our community.
