Discussion with Director of Hungarian documentary on press freedom, "80 Angry Journalists"

"80 Angry Journalists" (80 dühös újságíró), about press freedom in Hungary, premieres at DOC NYC on November 12 after a strong run at European festivals. Its director, András Földes, is a journalist and filmmaker, and its lead subject, Vera Munk, is editor-in-chief of 444 and former editor-in-chief of Telex. The film is arguably more timely now, even after April's elections ended Orbán's 16 years in power. The media system built over that period, from a captured public broadcaster to consolidated pro-government outlets, does not disappear with a change of government, and the journalists in the film are now navigating that transition. Their experience offers lessons for newsrooms elsewhere facing political pressure, both in resisting it and in rebuilding afterward.
