An Evening with Anne Fadiman: Looking back on The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down after three decades

Nearly thirty years ago, Fadiman's sensitive story of Lia Lee, a Hmong child with epilepsy, and her American doctors, brought the complexities of cross-cultural medicine to a wide audience and changed the way that medicine is practiced and understood in the United States. The book continues to be taught at universities both as literary journalism and as a casebook for cross-cultural practice in general; it is also widely read by medical students and practitioners who wish to offer more effective care to patients from other cultures. As The New York Times' obituary of Lia Lee noted, "Lia's story, as few other narratives have done, has had a significant effect on the ways in which American medicine is practiced across cultures, and on the training of doctors." On October 22, Fadiman will speak with NYU Professor Perri Klass about how the book came to be, and how its lessons about medicine, culture, and care still resonate today.  REGISTER HERE (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2001217809339?aff=oddtdtcreator)
