Exile | Banishment | Home
What does it mean to be home and not yet home, to be "othered" or physically alienated even while at home, to search for a yearned-for distant or future land? E4TT explores this duality musically via Shostakovich's "From Jewish Folk Poetry" Op. 79 \(selections, sung in the poetry's original Yiddish\) and the World Premiere of "Skazka," a multimedia work of twisted Russian folktales reinterpreted by emerging composer Alexander Malinas \(with images by Aria Shum after Russian illustrator Ivan Bilibin\), in dialogue with works by Andrea Casarrubios \("Armadura," inspired by the life of Frida Kahlo\), Stella G. Gitelman Willoughby \("Stories of My Mother"\), Mary Bianco \(World Premiere of a new cello/piano duo\) and David Garner to text by renowned Yiddish poet Avram Sutkever \("Unter Dayne Vayse Shtern"\).
Pre-concert talk with composers Bianco and Malinas.
Performed by E4TT \(Nanette McGuinness, soprano; Megan Chartier, cello; Margaret Halbig, piano\) joined by guests Grace Wahlen, conductor; Carina Kahane soprano; Melinda Martinez Becker, mezzo-soprano; Aria Shum, violin; Taylor Robinson, flute/piccolo; Zoe King, clarinet/Bass clarinet; and Eddie Virtgaym, percussion
