Two Films. One Manilatown Legacy.
"Two Films. One Manilatown Legacy." brings two generations of San Francisco's Manilatown and International Hotel history to the big screen at SFMOMA for a special FREE double-feature presentation.
At 1 PM, experience the San Francisco premiere of the newly enhanced and restored edition of Curtis Choy's landmark 1983 documentary, "The Fall of the I-Hotel". The film chronicles the decade-long struggle to save San Francisco's International Hotel and the August 4, 1977 eviction of its predominantly Filipino and Chinese elder tenants. Following the screening, filmmaker Curtis Choy joins co-producers of the enhanced edition for a community conversation moderated by Caroline Ocampo.
At 3 PM, experience the premiere of "Manilatown Manang", the story of Jeanette Gandionco Lazam-artist, activist, and one of the few women who lived in the International Hotel as a Tenant Defender during the historic anti-eviction movement. The film follows Jeanette's journey from the I-Hotel struggle through a lifetime of activism, art, and community. Following the premiere, Jeanette Lazam joins the film's producers and creative team for a community conversation moderated by Caroline Ocampo.
Together, the films create a powerful dialogue between past and present: audiences first encounter Jeanette as a young activist in Choy's historic documentary, then experience the continuation of her story in Manilatown Manang.
