Volunteer at Black Point Historic Gardens

Join us in stewarding Black Point! This quiet, all but forgotten spot, tucked away above the hustling bustling San Francisco waterfront, is coming back to life—and we need your help. Located within Fort Mason, the site was developed with gardens and pathways in the 1850s by early San Francisco residents. Sheltered from the wind and offering striking views of the bay and city, it's easy to see why the hillside was a favored place for the community to garden and stroll. With volunteer support, the garden pathways have been unearthed and the site brought back to life—Black Point is now open to the public. We still have a lot of work to do to make this space feel like a garden again. Volunteers will help remove invasive species and revegetate the garden with native and horticultural species planted by residents over 100 years ago. Activities primarily include weeding, pruning, and planting. When: Thursdays 2–5 pm, Fridays 9 am–Noon, and 1st Saturdays 10 am–1 pm. Where: Meet at the top of the main staircase, just behind the Fort Mason General's Residence. If no one is there to greet you, please walk into the gardens – we are already working on the site!
