PROGRAM DETAILS: When Thurs-Sun, Oct 1-Nov 1, 2026 | 10 AM-4 PM, during open hours Location NUMU | 106 E. Main Street Cost Free with admission This program is self-led and drop-in. No registration is required. Treat yourself to art this October at NUMU by making paper slip pumpkins and marigold tissue garlands. Visit our MakerSpace to create your own pumpkin using silly scissors and slips of colorful paper. Then, make a hanging garland of marigolds from tissue paper and pipe cleaners. These crafts are perfect for the autumnal festivities. Paper Halloween decorations first entered American pop culture in the 1920s, made popular because of mass production and easy clean-up. From the 1930s onwards, DIY paper decorations became a mainstay in the American tradition, celebrating the lighthearted nature of the season, enjoyable for all ages. Although marigolds are a hallmark of Dia de los Muertos in Central American communities, they are also a part of Diwali, the South Asian festival of lights. Portuguese trade ships introduced marigolds in the 16th century while on route along the Indian coast. Quickly, the flower started to be associated with good luck and the sun because of vibrant colors of yellow to saffron and shape and their durability made them popular for making torans, Desi traditional garlands that decorate doorways. The Monthly Craft is a drop-in, self-led artmaking activity that complements NUMU's current exhibitions or seasonal themes. Activities are designed for a wide range of participants. Guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please leave the space as you found it for others to enjoy.
