Huntington Research Conference: This Land Is...

"This Land Is...: Common and Contested Ground in American History and Culture" examines the multilayered histories of American land in dialogue with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The range of panels will cover topics such as reframing the revolution, reconstruction amendments and the civil war, as well as mapping and unmapping borders. This 2-day conference deepens many of the stories in the exhibition “This Land Is …” and the companion volume of the larger Huntington initiative. In dialogue with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the institution has been exploring the many-layered histories of land in what is now the United States. A series of panels will unearth and examine some of those layers from different disciplinary perspectives and bring academic research into conversation with creative and community practices. The program concludes with a multi-vocal “hootenanny” of spoken word and song, bringing together music from the exhibition with contributors to the book This Land Is ...: Field Notes on American Ground.
