Tower Wind Quintet at Sandzén

The Tower Wind Quintet from Friends University in Wichita will perform an exciting group of selections at the Sandzén Gallery on Sunday, October 25 at 2:00pm.

The Tower Wind Quintet, comprised of Friends University faculty, was formed in 2001. The current lineup consists of Marquette, Kansas, native, Chris Johnson on clarinet; along with Amy Hoffman, flute; Natalie Myers, oboe; Wade Marisol, horn; and Kimme Whittemore, bassoon. Amy and Kimme are original members of the group and they last performed at the Sandzén Gallery in 2022.

The program will feature two standards in the quintet repertoire: "Three Shanties" by Malcom Arnold and "Early Hungarian Dances" by Ferenc Farkas. In addition, they will perform "Come Unto Him" by Betsy Lee Bailey, which features harp and sign language to share the words from Matthew 11:28 the piece is based on. Also included is the quintet's version of "Fly Me To The Moon" and the concert will conclude with an exciting Hungarian rhapsody called"Tzigane" by Valerie Coleman.

The quintet enjoys collaborating with a variety of other art disciplines. They have worked with the Friends Ballet Department and Visual Arts Department: Charles Parker (drama); Dr. James Knight (professor of piano); Rolaine Hetherington (soprano); Dan Racer and Randy Zellers (composers); the Friends University Concert Band as featured soloists; the faculty brass quintet, string quartet, and percussion; and have produced multimedia presentations including lights and photography.

The Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery is located at 401 N First Street. There is no charge for the concert, however, donations are appreciated. For further information, please call the Gallery at 785-227-2220
