UK Balinese Gamelan 10th Anniversary Concert

The UK Balinese Gamelan Langen Kerti is thrilled to celebrate its 10th Anniversary in a blockbuster gamelan extravaganza with guest master artists I Made Lasmawan and Ni Ketut Marni, as well as a guest Balinese gamelan ensemble Gamelan Mojomanis from Indianapolis, led by Hirotaka Inuzuka. The UK Ensemble features the 4 pitch gamelan angklung from Bali while the Gamelan Mojomanis ensemble features a customized tuning of pitches -- similar to the five-tone scale used in gamelan gong kebyar -- but with its own distinct sound. Along with two contrasting styles of shimmering bronze gamelan instruments, this concert will also showcase several dance pieces as well as the marching gamelan style called baleganjur. UK’s Balinese gamelan angklung set was purchased in 2016 and was bestowed the name “Langen Kerti” in a special naming ceremony by master artist I Made Lasmawan. The expression “langen kerti” means to enjoy the activities of a happy life or to “follow your bliss.” Finally, this concert will be supported by another island-based style from the newly-formed UK Hawaiian ensemble, led by Austin Young.
