Date and Time: Oct. 28, 2026, 7 p.m. ET

Description:

Join Purdue University for a virtual topic webinar exploring why understanding and demystifying artificial intelligence matters as AI continues to shape industries, organizations and everyday life.

Presented by Dr. Mary Anne Smart, computer science professor at Purdue University, this session will examine what can go wrong when AI is deployed without a sufficient understanding of the technology and the real-world environments in which it operates. Through well-known examples of AI gone wrong, including Microsoft’s Tay chatbot, Dr. Smart will explore the challenges that can arise when technical capabilities are not considered alongside people, systems and deployment contexts.

Attendees will gain insight into the importance of combining technical knowledge with an understanding of human and organizational factors to use AI safely and responsibly. The session will offer a practical perspective on navigating the excitement and concerns surrounding AI while highlighting why a deeper understanding of the technology is essential for informed decision-making.
