(Victor Kossakovsky, 2020, Norway/USA, 93 minutes)

Tragically underseen owing to bad pandemic timing (it world premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2020), Victor Kossakovsky’s documentary Gunda is one of the great animal pictures of recent years. Rated G by the MPAA (which almost nothing is anymore; even Toy Story 5 was slapped with a PG this year), shot in black and white, and without dialogue, Gunda mostly follows a pig and her piglets, two cows, and a one-legged chicken. Observational, moving, and gorgeous, with great compositions and camerawork, Gunda demands to be seen on the big screen.
