Mad for the Movies: Character Actors Take the Lead - Living in Oblivion

Every Wednesday night at 6 pm, we invite you to join us at Mad for the Movies for free screenings of classic films with the intent of exploring and enjoying cinema from every era. Movies are chosen to fit a fresh theme each month which will typically highlight an actor or director, a genre, a time period, or a common plot element. You are welcome to stay after the film for a casual chat or treat it like a theater visit and leave as soon as the end credits roll.

Very few actors make a living out of being the lead. Most, usually because of their age or look, are relegated to side characters for the majority of their careers. This month, we will be watching movies where these character actors got the rare chance to show they can play the lead role too. Features: Ernest Borgnine, June Squibb, Steve Buscemi, and Takashi Shimura.

On this night, we will be watching Tom DiCillo's 1995 film "Living in Oblivion" starring Steve Buscemi, Catherine Keener, and Dermot Mulroney. It is rated R.

Low-budget independent filmmaker Nick Reve tries to keep everything together as his production is plagued with an insecure actress, a megalomaniac star, a pretentious beret-wearing director of photography, and lousy catering.
