Surface Matters

This exhibition explores how contemporary artists use pattern to transform glass and ceramics into complex visual experiences. For some artists, pattern emerges directly from process—the woven cane of a glass vessel, the engraved surface of an object, or the repeated gestures embedded in clay. For others, these aspects become tools for storytelling, cultural traditions, or constructed narratives. Geometric repetition, organic motifs, and intricate surface treatments encourage viewers to consider how these elements can shape meaning. From simple patterns to complex imagery, from method to decoration, the artists in this exhibition explore pattern as a means of expression.

Bringing together glass and ceramic artists, including Lino Tagliapietra, Klaus Moje, Bennett Bean, and Roberto Lugo, this exhibition examines how pattern can serve as both visual embellishment and a vehicle for meaning.
