Living Up to Openness
As researchers face growing pressure to demonstrate the impact of their work amid the increasing metrification of research assessment, developing metrics literacy is essential not only as a form of self-protection but also as a means of empower researchers to advocate for the responsible use of metrics within and beyond their institutions. This workshop introduces a practical workflow for tracking and demonstrating research impact that is grounded in open science principles and supported by open scholarly infrastructure, including ORCID, Zotero, OpenAlex, and R.
The first part of the workshop highlights common pitfalls of widely used metrics, such as the h-index and Journal Impact Factor (JIF), and explores alternative, more inclusive indicators for evaluating research impact. The second part consists of a hands-on session using R to retrieve bibliographic records via the OpenAlex API and to generate descriptive statistics and visualization of research impact.
No prior programming experience is required. However, participants should bring their own laptops and are strongly encouraged to install R and RStudio before attending. For those who encounter technical difficulties, we have partnered with Holland Computing Center (HCC) to provide demo accounts for accessing RStudio through HCC OnDemand.
Participants are also encouraged to register for an ORCID iD and to maintain their records of publications and creative works in Zotero. A sample dataset will be provided for anyone who does not bring their own data.
