Artist Talk: Michael Jacobs: Artistic Practice and Pursuit

Mike Jacobs is a visual artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. He earned his BFA from the University of Cincinnati in 2000 and his MFA in Painting from Arizona State University’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in 2019 where he received numerous honors including grants, awards, and scholarships from the Martin Wong Foundation, Arizona Artists Guild, the Gayle J. Novak & Robert D. Cocke Award in Painting, and the Gerry Grout Visual Arts Scholarship. While living in Arizona, Jacobs taught Color Theory at ASU and 2D Art and Design at Maricopa Community college.

Jacobs' work has been exhibited nationally at FotoFocus Biennial (Cincinnati, OH), Torrance Art Museum (Torrance, CA), Bentley Gallery (Phoenix, AZ), and the Baton Rouge Gallery Center for Contemporary Art (Baton Rouge, LA). Internationally, his work has been shown at ARTE Galería in Quito, Ecuador, and RAE space for contemporary art in Berlin, Germany. In addition to his studio practice, Jacobs works in the field of industrial design as a painter for the Cincinnati, OH based company 3D Color, where he specializes in painting prototypes and visual models for many well known consumer brands.

Jacobs will use his experience and work to broadly talk with students about how to authentically build meaning in their work, how he has gone about creating work outside an academic setting, and finally expectations and the art world, the possible routes to exhibiting their work.
