Catherine Allgor: A Perfect Union: Dolley Madison and the Creation of the American Nation

The Michael J. Colligan History Project

Dolley Madison made an indelible imprint on American culture and society. As acclaimed historian Catherine Allgor demonstrates in “A Perfect Union: Dolley Madison and the Creation of the American Nation,” the First Lady and “Presidentress” became one of the best-known figures in the United States, even earning the title of “America’s Queen.” An innovative and skilled politician, Madison employed her role as a “lady” and a hostess of social events to cultivate bipartisanship and unite the new nation, and in doing so, fashioned the role of First Lady.

Funding generously provided by Hamilton Community Foundation. Presented by One City, One Book and the Michael J. Colligan History Project in association with America 250-Ohio.
