The Negro Artist Experience at DMACC
Open to the public, The Negro Artist Experience celebrates and honors America’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. This program includes a poetry-writing workshop led by spoken-word poet Caleb Rainey (The Negro Artist) and poet Kelsey Bigelow; a media production workshop with producer Nik Heftman; a poetry performance and introduction by Rainey and Heftman; a screening of The Negro Artist, produced by Heftman; and a concluding Q&A session. The documentary explores Rainey’s experiences addressing race, identity, and inequality as a Black spoken-word poet in Iowa. Heftman’s production company, The Seven Times, highlights Black artists and entrepreneurs making positive change in their communities. Participants will be invited to share their original poetry through the local newspaper and radio station. Space is limited for this event, so please sign up at the Carroll Public Library!
