A New Old Play

Qiu Jiongjiong, 2022, 179 min, China

After his death in the 1980s, Qiu Fu, a celebrated clown performer in Sichuan opera, begins a journey toward the Ghost City while revisiting memories of his life and career. Through war, famine, political upheaval, and the changing fortunes of his theater troupe, the film traces both one performer’s story and the turbulent history of 20th-century China.
