Writing From Experience: An Eight Week Workshop

Join us for a writing workshop presented by Sandor Goodhart, Professor Emeritus of English and Interdisciplinary Studies, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN.

Any individual of college-age or older may participate. Starting September 8, we will meet at Hussey Mayfield Memorial Library, Zionsville every Tuesday for eight weeks. Each session will last one hour, 6:00-7:00pm.

Starting the second week of the course, each participant will submit 600 to 900 words of experiential writing that will be shared with the group anonymously before the meeting. The papers will be submitted to the instructor by email by 10 p.m. Saturday evening. Each participant will also bring 11 printed copies of that weeks essay which will be distributed to the group. Two of the papers submitted each week (chosen by the instructor in advance) will be discussed by the group (again, anonymously).

There will be no grading of the writing made by the instructor. And the writing that is chosen for consideration in a given class will be discussed on the basis of the extent to which, from a reader's perspective, the writer has achieved their purpose in writing the piece — to the extent that such a purpose can be determined within the writing itself.

TOPICS

Topics may be determined by the instructor or by the group but will always be the same for everyone in the group for a given week and of a sufficiently general nature. For example, "Describe an object (a chair, a table), an occasion (a birthday party), a location (Paris, my grandmother's farm, the alleyway behind our house), a person (my mother, or father, or sister, or brother, or cousin, or friend ), an event (a flood), and so forth.

REGISTRATION

Any individual wishing to participate must register for and is expected to participate in the entire series barring emergencies.

COST

The course is free of any charge to any interested participant.
