Centering Autistic* Voices and Experiences: A Tween Book Club

Join us for fun activities and to talk about our book, The Fire, the Water, and Maudie McGinnby Sally J. Pla. This book will be available for pick up at book club and the Circulation Desk, and is also available as an audiobook on Libby. Parents are welcome to stick around throughout the event.

The library is collaborating with the School of Education at Iowa State University, to develop a book club centered on autistic authors, characters and experiences. This space will be a place to create community, share experiences, celebrate Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and read great young adult literature. Tweens (grades 5-8), including those with ASD; those who care for someone with ASD and/or those who simply want to learn more are welcome. This event is for tweens and teens, grades 5 - 8. Registration required.

*We acknowledge person-first language as a valid option for describing ASD. Our language use aligns with Devon Price, PhD (2022), author of Unmasking Autism, who argues that person-first language can further stigmatize an ASD diagnosis. We use Autistic to affirm and celebrate the ASD experience.
