Most Americans draw a straight line from the “shot heard round the world” in April 1775 to the Declaration of Independence in July 1776, but the path to independence was more complicated. Three recently discovered documents from the summer and fall of 1775 reveal how a prominent member of the Continental Congress conducted back-channel negotiations to avert a final break with Great Britain.
