First Fridays, December: 'Human Rights' and 'Love of Country and Honey'

Lunch at 11:30 a.m. Presentations begin at noon. A tour of the archival caverns will take place after the event concludes.   PRESENTATIONS "Human Rights at Home and Abroad" Presented by Kayla T. Jackson, Project Archivist, University Archives. Do you know your (human) rights? Come and learn how Minnesotans have shaped how governments consider the rights and privileges of their citizens across the globe.   "For Love of Honey and Country" Presented by Kent Gerber, University Archives. Dr. Mykola Haydak, Professor of Entomology and Beekeeping, kept consistent records of the hundreds of bee colonies in the University of Minnesota campus apiaries for 33 years and was known throughout the world for his research on apiary management, bee nutrition, and bee development. He also devoted considerable time to the problem of overwintering under Minnesota conditions and the formulation of pollen substitutes for brood rearing. His findings are still recommended resources in the current practice of beekeeping. His impact was very embedded in the Minnesota beekeeping community, but it was also internationally recognized and resulted in a research fellowship in Australia at the end of his career in 1965.   About First Fridays First Fridays is a series of intellectually stimulating talks from the Archives and Special Collections at the UMN Libraries.   This year's theme is "Archivist's Choice!"  All of our collections have extensive depth and breadth — and some random things too. Not every remarkable story can fit into a theme. This year we're throwing out a theme in favor of the archivist's choice. Anything under the sun is fitting for this smorgasbord of presentations!   These events are made possible by a generous gift from Gov. Elmer L. Andersen and Mrs. Eleanor Andersen in honor of former University Librarian Dr. Edward B. Stanford.
