Minnesota’s AIDS Generation
By 1995, one in nine gay Americans had been diagnosed with AIDS and one in 15 had died – a decimation of the generation of gay men born between 1951 and 1970. Minnesota’s AIDS generation are now senior citizens, but thousands did not survive. This is a painful chapter in our state’s history, but also a hopeful story of a besieged community’s resilience. Award-winning writer Brian Malloy will examine the era’s moralization and politicization of the disease and provide a personal history of how gay men and their allies came together to save lives in the face of a largely indifferent and hostile nation.
