Healthy Iowa: Environmental Science, Public Health Data, and the Law

Environmental contaminants, from PFAS and pesticides to emerging contaminants that may not yet be fully understood, raise complicated questions for communities: What are we being exposed to? What are the potential health effects? How do we know when there is a problem? Who is responsible? And what can communities and individuals do when contamination is discovered? This public-facing panel will bring together experts in science, public health, and environmental law to explore those questions and help the public better understand how environmental contamination moves from a scientific concern to a public-health issue and, ultimately, sometimes to a legal and policy response. The panelists:Larry Weber, Director, IIHR–Hydroscience & Engineering, University of IowaDavid Cwiertny, Director, Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC), University of IowaMary Charlton, Director and Principal Investigator, Iowa Cancer Registry, University of IowaJohn Lande, Shareholder, Dickinson Bradshaw LawLunch will be provided for those who register in advance, before November 2, 2026.
