Butte des Morts: The Stories Beyond the Tombstones Book Release

This second publication of the Butte des Morts Historical Preservation Society continues the saga of the Butte des Morts, Wisconsin community. Since there is no better place to go in search of history than in a cemetery, this guide was compiled to lead the reader to some of our more captivating former residents.

Journey with us to six nearby graveyards, each showcasing the lives of people who shaped Butte des Morts. Along the way you will meet several with familiar last names, like Petford, Plummer, Bogk, and Overton. But now you will be introduced to the individual members of those families and discover some of the interesting activities they did such as a “lighthouse keeper”, a riverboat tavern owner and an archeologist. You will also be lead to new folks too, from an early movie entertainer; a runaway couple; and even an assault that leads to a social injustice. Besides those who lived their entire lives in the village we did not leave out those who made the village their second home during summer and hunting seasons. Shared are their encounters with bank robbers, suffragettes and UFOs. We warn you the path has a few unexpected twists and turns!

So, ramble along with us and discover the ingenuity, tragedies, and resilience of the people who once inhabited Butte des Morts!
