Carthage Theatre Presents: 'The Theory of the Leisure Class'
The Carthage Theatre Department \(https://www.carthage.edu/academics/majors-minors/theatre/\) presents "The Theory of the Leisure Class" Friday, Oct. 23 through Saturday, Oct. 31, in the Wartburg Theatre. Showtimes: Oct. 23, 29-31 | 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 25 | 3 p.m. Th e Gilded Age brought great technological innovation, rapid urbanization, extraordinary wealth inequality, and racial inequity. Tariffs were high, there was no income tax, and wealth distribution was at its greatest disparity in American history…until now. The 18th installment in Carthage's New Play Initiative \(https://www.carthage.edu/arts/experience-the-arts/theatre-dance-performances/new-play-initiative/\), "The Theory of the Leisure Class" collides two major events of the Gilded Age - the Vanderbilt ball and the Haymarket Riots - into a single evening. Is this a society comedy of manners, a high-stakes clash between robber barons and anarchists - or is it all an AI hallucination? This funny and incredibly timely play explores the invention of bling culture in America, how we construct reality, and the end of history as we know it.Tickets: To purchase tickets, please visit our online ticketing page \(https://www.carthage.edu/arts/box-office/get-tickets/\) available 24/7 or call the Box Office at 262-551-6661 from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. \*Carthage students, faculty, and staff receive complimentary ticket\(s\) for select visual and performing arts events.
