Pages Through History

We welcome author Theodore Karamanski to our discussion of Great Lake: An Unnatural History of Lake Michigan.

Created by glacial action 11,000 years ago (a mere blip in geological time) Lake Michigan’s story has never not been a human story. People hunted mastodons along its shores, crossed its unpredictable waters in birchbark canoes and great sailing ships, remade its southern end to accommodate an industrial megacity, and, in the 20th century, faced the consequences of all they had done to it.
