BME Seminar | Dr. Edward Phelps – "Immune Engineering Approaches for Type 1 Diabetes" | Wed., Nov 4 at 11 AM

The Department of Biomedical Engineering invites you to our next BME Seminar, held in hybrid format on Wednesday, November 4, at 11:00 AM. A calendar invite and flyer are attached.

Speaker: Dr. Edward Phelps, Associate Professor, J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Florida; Assistant Director of Basic and Translational Science, UF Diabetes Institute

Title: Immune Engineering Approaches for Type 1 Diabetes

About the talk: Dr. Phelps's lab works where biomaterials engineering meets the biology and treatment of pancreatic islet diseases such as type 1 diabetes (T1D). His group developed PEG hydrogels that help transplanted islets revascularize. They are now building shear-thinning, self-healing microporous annealed particle (MAP) hydrogels and adding T-cell–inhibiting proteins to their surfaces, so the immune response can be suppressed locally during beta cell replacement. The lab also uses living slices of human pancreas to study beta cell function during autoimmune attack and to test new therapies in a fully human setting.

About the speaker: Dr. Phelps earned his PhD in Bioengineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and did his postdoctoral training at EPFL in Switzerland. He started his lab at the University of Florida in 2017. His expertise includes advanced bioimaging, hydrogel engineering, beta cell replacement and islet physiology. His research is funded by NIH/NIDDK, the NIH Human Islet Research Network (HIRN), Breakthrough T1D, Diabetes Research Connection and Immunocore Ltd.
