The Right to Vote: Constitutional Questions, Historical Perspectives, and the Path Forward for American Democracy

This symposium foregrounds the value of interdisciplinarity in human understanding. The event combines scholars from the School of Law and the humanities from Loyola and other universities as well as voting rights advocates from the general public to shed light on the existential crisis now facing American democracy. In this way, the symposium combines the humanism of Jesuit tradition with the Jesuit emphasis on mission, to enlist higher education in the pursuit of social justice. The symposium’s design encourages Loyola students, faculty and alumni and the broader Chicago community to confront a long-standing but increasingly urgent questions in the United States: What counts as injustice? And, more importantly, what can we do about injustice?
