An online discussion of James Weldon Johnson by David Blight, Sterling Professor of History at Yale and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition.
Blight is the author of a number of books, including the Pulitzer Prize winner "Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom." He is currently working on a biography of Johnson, whose papers are at the Beinecke Library.
Blight's other works include "Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory" and "Yale and Slavery: A History."
The James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection at Yale, founded in 1941, is a key archive of African American history and culture. The collection helps to honor the remarkable life of the author, professor, lawyer, diplomat, poet, songwriter, and civil rights activist Johnson.
