"Survival at Treblinka" Guest Lecture with Historian Dr. Chad Gibbs
On August 2, 1943, prisoners at the Nazi extermination camp Treblinka launched an uprising against their SS guards. In his new book, Chad S.A. Gibbs draws on new sources and methods to reassess what happened that day and the longer saga of Jewish resistance at Treblinka. In the process, this book delivers the first in-depth look at the lives of Jewish women at this camp and their pivotal—though often erased—roles in planning and carrying out the revolt.
Chad S.A. Gibbs is assistant professor and director of the Zucker/Goldberg Center for Holocaust Studies at the College of Charleston. His new book Survival at Treblinka: Geography, Gender, and Social Networks in Jewish Resistance (University of Wisconsin Press, 2026) was recently named First Runner-Up for the George L. Mosse First Book Prize. Chad is a historian of the Holocaust and of World War II with focus on resistance, oral history, and pedagogy.
This event is free and open to the public. Co-sponsored by the Jewish Studies Program, European Studies Program, and Department of Women and Gender Studies.
