Normalizing Rest for Advisors and Mentors

As advisors and mentors, we spend much of our time supporting others, yet conversations about our own need for rest can feel overlooked. In professions that value responsiveness and care for others, rest can feel difficult to prioritize and even harder to discuss openly.

This in-person, discussion-based workshop creates space for honest conversation about rest, restoration, and sustainability in advising and mentoring work. Using frameworks such as the 7 Types of Rest, Recovery Experience Theory, and Attention Restoration Theory (ART), participants will reflect on the different ways our work can deplete us, explore what feels restorative (and what doesn't), and how rest looks different across individuals, roles, and seasons of life. Rather than prescribing self-care strategies, this workshop focuses on normalizing rest as a necessary part of sustaining ourselves, our work, and our ability to support students and colleagues.
