Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks Lecture: Queer and Trans Pentecostal Life in a Divided Brazil

Free and Open to the Public

Reception: 5:30 P.M.

Lecture: 6:00 to 7:30 P.M.

By the time of this talk, Brazil will have concluded another fiercely contested election. Religion, gender, and sexuality remain central to the country’s political divisions. Brazilian Pentecostalism is often associated with the political right, opposition to feminist and LGBTQ movements, and resistance to religious pluralism. Yet this obscures the growing visibility of

queer and trans Pentecostal identities.

Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, this talk explores how these communities navigate Brazil’s political and religious divisions.

Presented by Joseph A. Coyle

Joseph A. Coyle is a postdoctoral research associate in Religious Studies at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His research examines queer and trans Pentecostal worldmaking in

The Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks Lecture is presented by the UNO Department of Religious Studies in conjunction with the Rabbi Sidney and Jane Brooks Professorship of Social Justice and Religion.
